auditions
Auditions for new members are held in the spring for the following school year. Specific audition dates for each instrument will be listed in the Events Calendar as soon as they are available. In the mean time we hope the information listed on this page will answer many of your questions. Please contact the RPYO if you wish to know anything more.
Students auditioning must be in grades 7 through 11 at the time of the Spring Audition, or entering at least the 8th grade the following fall.
RPYO members must participate in a regularly scheduled school instrument ensemble and are required to take private lessons on the instrument they play in the RPYO.
Currently there is a $20 application fee. You can find the application for audition on our forms page by clicking here.
The application deadline is March 20, 2008 .
Students will play for the RPYO music director, and one or two RPO musicians. They will be asked to play without accompaniment the following:
- One or two short musical selections of the student's choice of about 5 minutes in length and containing contrasting slow/expressive and fast/technical passages.
- A standard orchestral excerpt that will be mailed three weeks prior to the audition.
- A sight-reading passage selected by the adjudicators.
- Musicality
- Technical expertise
- Intonation, rhythm and quality of sound
- Sight reading skills
- Orchestral balance
There will be openings for the 2008-2009 RPYO season in all sections except Oboe, Tuba, and Harp.
Auditions for the RPYO are highly competitive. Each year there are limited openings available, and the RPYO is unfortunately unable to admit many musically talented students. We encourage these students to re-audition. Occasionally, we may hold special auditions for new students in the late spring or early September for remaining openings in particular sections. Auditions are not normally held once the season begins.
No, only for seating assignments each fall. Seating assignments are made for the entire year.
