Providing enriching musical and educational experiences to highly capable and committed young musicians...

The Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (RPYO) is a symphony orchestra comprised of young musicians in grades eight through twelve from schools throughout the greater Rochester area.

The RPYO is sponsored by the Education Department of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra whose musicians serve as mentors and coaches to the RPYO and join them in the annual Side-by-Side concert in Eastman Theatre.

The RPYO has a demanding schedule from September through May, including:

  • Weekly Sunday afternoon rehearsals
  • Three formal concerts in major Rochester concert halls
  • September Retreat weekend
  • Community outreach events
  • Periodic Spring Tours
  • Fundraising activities

Former RPYO trombonist Ward Stare has been appointed the 12th Music Director of the 92-year old Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The 31-year old maestro returns to Rochester after serving as Resident Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and guest conductor of major symphony orchestras and opera companies in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Rochester and the RPYO are tremendously proud of his accomplishments and look forward to many seasons of exciting music by the superb Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra under his baton.
